Casino News Roundup: Strike Looms, Ocean Resort, Big Payday

Casino Workers Strike Vote Online Casinos Ocean Resort Casino

This week’s casino news is highlighted by a player who turned his last few dollars into a life-changing win. We’ll recap a couple of key stories in Las Vegas and Atlantic City before expanding on the big online casino win.

Vegas Casino Workers Vote In Favor Of Strike

While the casinos see a boost in foot traffic thanks to the Vegas Golden Knights making the Stanley Cup final, they might see an exit from a different type of regular: their employees. A storm is brewing in Las Vegas as 50,000 employees that work in the casino/hotel industry could go on strike this week. These 50,000 employees are a part of the Culinary Union, whose contract is up at midnight on Thursday, May 31. That means the 34 casinos that employ these workers might need to start looking for temporary workers as the union has voted to go on strike.

Low unemployment rates are usually a good thing but it will make this particular situation more difficult on the casinos. Negotiations for this contract have been ongoing since February and the two sides can’t come to an agreement.

The last time this happened, a strike went for 67 days and it was a major cost for everyone involved. Las Vegas missed out on about $1 million a day in revenues and early projections suggest it could be even more this time around. The two sides would do well to get this sorted out before the customers start to see any type of interruption in service.

Will Hill Will Run Sportsbook For Ocean Resort

The Ocean Resort Casino, which is slated to open in June in Atlantic City, has tabbed William Hill US to run the sportsbook there. The casino, which is the former Revel and TEN properties, is expected to open on June 28. There are still some approvals to be worked out ahead of the grand opening but both sides seem confident that the deal will go through.

The Ocean Resort Casino will have some competition as the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City is also supposed to open on June 28. However, the Ocean Resort Casino is ready for the battle as it will have a 7,500-square-foot sportsbook to draw in players. It will also have private suites for major events like the Super Bowl and March Madness.

William Hill US is well-known in Las Vegas, where it runs over 100 sportsbooks. It has also been partnered with Monmouth Park in New Jersey since 2013.

Online Player Turns Last Dollars Into Big Payday

Online gambler Dennis (not his real name) seemed like he was on his last legs before he turned the last of his account into a life-changing win. The player, who hails from Burton upon Trent in England, had about $10 remaining in his account before making a small bet of just under $3. That bet turned into winnings of over $86,000. He made the winning wage at online casino Casumo.com while playing the online slot Divine Fortune.

At first, Dennis didn’t believe it was real, but after checking his laptop and seeing the winnings, it finally sank in. He already has plans for the money as his two children received gifts, and he and his wife will go on a holiday to Tenerife in the Canary Islands.
